Design and Display
The iPhone 18 Pro keeps Apple's familiar Pro-series design but comes with refreshed finishes and a slightly thicker body to accommodate the larger battery and updated camera hardware.
It features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, HDR, True Tone and an anti-reflective coating.
The display can reach up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, making it easier to view outdoors.
Apple has also reduced the size of the Dynamic Island by around 35%, giving the screen slightly more usable space. The redesigned Dynamic Island can also display up to three Live Activities at once.

A20 Pro Performance
The iPhone 18 Pro is powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chipset, built using a 2nm process.
The chip features a six-core CPU and a seven-core GPU, with Apple claiming improvements in both CPU and graphics performance compared with the previous generation.
Apple has also significantly upgraded the cooling system. The new vapor chamber has around three times the surface area of the one used in the iPhone 17 Pro, helping the phone maintain performance during demanding workloads such as gaming and video editing.
The A20 Pro also brings additional Neural Accelerators for Apple's on-device AI features.
A New Variable-Aperture Camera
The camera system is arguably the biggest upgrade on the iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple now uses 48MP sensors across all three rear cameras, with the main camera getting a physical variable aperture.
The 48MP Fusion Main camera can switch between:
- f/1.48
- f/1.8
- f/2.8
- f/4.0

The wider f/1.48 aperture can allow more light into the sensor for low-light photography, while narrower apertures can provide greater depth of field for subjects such as groups and landscapes.
The main camera also supports 24mm and 48mm focal lengths, along with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization.
48MP Ultra Wide and Telephoto
The Ultra Wide camera has also been upgraded to 48MP, with a 13mm equivalent focal length and 120-degree field of view. It supports both high-resolution photography and macro shots.
The 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera offers a 100mm equivalent focal length with 4x optical zoom. It can also provide an 8x optical-quality view and up to 40x digital zoom.
More Camera Controls for Creators
Apple has expanded the manual controls available in the Camera app.
Users can now adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while an on-screen histogram provides additional exposure information.
The iPhone 18 Pro also introduces Photographic Styles 3, giving users more control over the look of their photos.
For creators, these additions make the Pro model more flexible than a typical point-and-shoot smartphone camera.
18MP Center Stage Camera
On the front, Apple has upgraded the camera to an 18MP Center Stage camera with autofocus.
Center Stage can automatically adjust framing to keep the subject within the frame during photos and video calls. The camera also supports Dual Capture and tap-to-zoom and rotate controls.
Video Features
Video remains one of the iPhone 18 Pro's strongest areas.
The phone supports 4K Dolby Vision recording, alongside professional features such as:
- ProRes RAW
- Apple Log 2
- 4K ProRes recording up to 60fps with external recording
- Smart Focus Tracking
- improved AudioMix
- 4K Dolby Vision time-lapse
- improved low-light video
Smart Focus Tracking can automatically keep a selected subject in focus while recording, which could be particularly useful for creators shooting people, pets or moving subjects.
Apple Intelligence and iOS 27
The iPhone 18 Pro runs iOS 27, bringing deeper integration with Apple Intelligence.
Siri gets a major upgrade with the ability to understand personal context from supported apps and interact with information currently displayed on the screen.
Other AI features include improved Writing Tools, Clean Up and Extend for photos, smarter Shortcuts and additional intelligent features across iOS.
Apple has also introduced Apple Reference Image, designed to help identify whether an image is an original photograph or has been generated or significantly modified using AI.
Battery and Connectivity
Apple claims up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro.
Fast charging can take the phone to around 50% in 15 minutes, while a five-minute charge can provide up to six hours of video playback under Apple's testing conditions.
Connectivity has also been upgraded with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 and USB-C Gen 2.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Worth the Upgrade?
The iPhone 18 Pro is more than a routine performance upgrade. The variable-aperture 48MP main camera, 48MP Ultra Wide and upgraded telephoto system make photography a major focus this generation.
The A20 Pro chip and larger cooling system should also make the phone better suited to sustained gaming and professional workloads, while the improved battery life adds to its everyday appeal.
For iPhone 17 Pro users, the upgrade may make the most sense if you specifically want the new camera system and AI features. But for users coming from an older Pro model, the improvements in cameras, performance, battery and video features make the iPhone 18 Pro a much more significant upgrade.
HithX Verdict
The iPhone 18 Pro focuses on the areas that matter most: camera, performance and battery. The new variable aperture is the standout upgrade, while the A20 Pro and improved cooling make it a stronger phone for demanding users and creators.
If photography and video are your priorities, the iPhone 18 Pro looks like one of Apple's most capable Pro models yet.
